Discussion Prompts

Gathering for a book club and not sure how to get club members engaged as the discussion begins? Use these general discussion prompts to get the conversation started! These prompts can also be used for personal reflection after reading a book.

General Discussion Prompts

  • What did you like best about this book?
  • What did you like least about this book?
  • Share your favorite part of the book.
  • Was there a quote or passage you could relate to?
  • What feelings did this book evoke for you?
  • If you could ask the author one question, what would it be?
  • What do you think of the book’s title? Do you think it was an appropriate title? If not, what title might you choose?
  • What do you think the author’s purpose was in writing this book?

Fiction

  • Was the story believable? 
  • Did the characters seem believable to you?
  • Was there a character to whom you could particularly relate?
  • How did you feel about the ending for the book? Would you have preferred it end differently? If so, how?

Nonfiction

  • What level of knowledge did you have about this topic before reading this book?
  • What did you learn from this book?
  • What questions do you have after reading this book?
